The Speculation series of oval panel paintings began in 2016 and is ongoing. The title Speculation encompasses both facture and reception: it is intended in the sense of speculation as risk, and as conjecture or contemplation. It is also a nod to the Latin root specere, to look. Scaled in relation to the human head, these paintings obliquely reference mirrors and art historical portrait formats such the cameo. Rather than offering the mirror’s direct reflection or the portrait's representation, however, they invite an experience of expanded reflection.
